Goodbye, China-Doll, You Were and Are Loved

posted Nov 25, 2014, 7:00 PM by Heather Reimer

China-Doll
Mar. 7, 2002 - Nov. 21, 2014

Jean and Gerry Gatey are long-time friends of Virden Pet Network. So was their little girl, China. Here's what they wrote about her life story.

China was born on March 7, 2002 and joined our family on Jan 7, 2003. From the moment she was picked up on a stormy night in Winnipeg, she bonded with Gerry. They became inseparable except for short periods when other duties called or during Gerry's 5-day stay in hospital. (Holiday trips always included China and Buddy). It could be a matter of a few hours or a walk around the block, on Gerry's return China's greeting was sheer bedlam.

In no time, our four furry friends became one big family: China, Sushi (mother cat), Tiger (her daughter) and later big brother Buddy, a blind Shih Tzu.

China loved to ride in the car, her place of high-honour being the console between the front seats. On Buddy's arrival, even though he was blind, he insisted the small space must be shared. So came the famous platform so there was room for both. On long trips to Calgary, the two dogs never fussed. China watched the scenery for a while, then both would bed down in the back seat in their comforters. An invitation that triggered more bedlam was "Who wants to go for a walk?" After we got on the creek path, China's leash was removed so she was free to race full steam ahead. She would only go 50 feet then turn and make sure Gerry was with her. Then it was off again for another short dash!

China was showing signs of slowing down but on her last day, her walk was the same as always, racing in the piles of leaves along the creek, tail waving as she bounced along. In the late evening, she had what appeared to be a stroke. She died a few hours later following a heroic effort by Dr. Gita to save her.

We miss you so much, little princess. We'll love you forever. Rest in peace.

-Jean and Gerry Gatey

posted May 23, 2014, 10:32 AM by Heather Reimer   [ updated May 23, 2014, 2:32 PM ]

Virden Pet Network would like to field a candidate to run for Mayor of Virden!!!

Across the land, cats have been running for office to make a difference for homeless pets. Halifax and Winnipeg have candidates. Now it's our turn!

If you have adopted a cat or kitten from VPN who you think would provide a strong political voice for strays in this town, please add your nomination to our Facebook page. We want to know your cat's story and why he/she would make a good mayor!! Please include a photo of your nominee.  And may the best cat win.

Restarting the Rescue... Stronger

posted Nov 17, 2013, 6:35 PM by Heather Reimer

Virden Pet Network has been reorganized during its hiatus and now has a full slate of managers to handle all the duties involved in running such a busy rescue.

We ask you to please direct your call or email to the right manager. We have an intake and foster manager, adoptions manager, promotions manager, fundraising manager, low cost spay neuter program manager, and financial manager. To see the new roster, visit our Contact page.

The one thing we never seem to have enough of is foster homes. So please consider providing a warm, safe space for a stray... it's only temporary and it makes such a big difference to the homeless ones.

We also have a new phone number (see the masthead) for general inquiries.

Maggie's Story
by her loving humans Kathi and Doug Gatey
Long time friends and supporters of Virden Pet Network

After several visits to the Brandon Humane Society in the spring of 2002, we adopted Maggie on June 27. She had big shoes to fill as we had lost our dog of 16 years the year before and truly felt there could be no other dog as great as our Charli but we took a chance or perhaps fate intervened and there we were picking up this pudgy little puppy.

We headed straight to Clear Lake after picking her up and thus her attachment to the meadow at the lake began. In the years since as soon as the car pulled into the driveway at the cottage she would start barking to go to the meadow. Going for hikes and car rides were her pleasures.

In December, 2005, Maggie became a big sister to Annie. Annie was her pesky little sister without a doubt. The two became inseparable and there were many games of tug-of-war and when hiking a chase would always take place between the two. Maggie was a very majestic dog who felt the game of fetch was for babies.

In March of this year Maggie was diagnosed with a nasal tumor. She passed away on July 9. Maggie was a gentle loving dog who filled those big shoes left by Charli with a lot of grace. We are so grateful to have had her in our lives and know that we shall be reunited in our meadow.
